Tips to getting the right product finish

Turning Tools


Machinists utilize their skills and expertise to produce the most aesthetically pleasing and accurate components possible.  They take pride in their work as do their clients.  A good surface finish and the general look of parts are very important aspects which require the most ideal machining practices to be used.  So how do machinists get the results they want? The following is by no means extensive but it give a little insight:

Use an insert with a wiper

CNC Turning


If you can, make sure your manufacturer uses an insert with a wiper.  These have a flat section like the second image in the diagram above.  This flat part ensures that the surface is wiped smooth as the tool moves across the outside of the part.  You can also avoid a finish that has thread elements to it.

Increase the speed

When using cutting tools a rise in the speed of the tool will make sure that your part is touching the tip of the tool for a smaller time period.  This minimizes the material build-up on the end of the tool which can in turn make the surface finish less than ideal. 


Reduce pauses

When a tool stops while it is still touching the surface it can leave a mark on the part.  If you make sure to minimize the number of pauses and hesitations of your tool you can ensure a better surface finish.  You may need to change the entire manufacturing procedure.

Press Tooling on the Central Coast

As lead times become shorter and press tools become more complex, it’s important to be able to trial, develop and prove press tools thoroughly before delivery to the final production site.

The team at Alno Product Services try-out facility allows us to do just this, offering great benefits for our customers. We encourage customers to come and view "tool trials" in order to evaluate their tools pre-production. Where possible, we try to replicate the final production environment, this presents a good opportunity to address any potential issues before final delivery. “Ironing out” any issues prior to production, facilitates the transition from toolmaker to final production site smoothly with minimum hassle, effectively allowing our customers to “hit the ground running” when the tool is delivered to site.

Another advantage of our in-house try-out facility is that where possible we can provide product samples prior to a tools final construction. Even though a tool may not be complete it can still be used to make sample parts. Our customers benefit from this as it allows them to take away these parts early for use in their pre-production test builds allowing them to action other post processes earlier.

Solidworks Modeling - Multibodies

Multi bodies is an area of SolidWorks that has had a lot of consistent development over the last decade. It was added in 2001. Then have not been my preferred method of modeling except to say that they are very helpfully in creating injection moulded tooling. 

The development of in-context modeling has sure left SoildWorks competitors playing catchup in terms of development and ease of use. Multi body parts come into there own in large scale assemblies where per defined configurations can speed up the 3D modelling process. 

Where many people get caught is they treat multi body parts as and Assembly trying to mate them and create bills of materials with them. Virtual parts inside large assemblies offer the fast way to construct large assemblies in a team enviornment.
